Hello Blogosphere!

A grand welcome to NapoleonSplit. This blog is dedicated to a challenge, more specifically a book challenge, by the name of The Fifty Books, in which I will read fifty books (the number is the only thing that may change). The rules of the challenge must always be followed; they will be eternally enforced and never forgotten. As you will see the rules of The Fifty Books, not reading the fifty books, are where the challenge really lies.

The Fundamental Laws of The Fifty Books

  1. No two genres shall be read in a row.
  2. If a book is read that has been turned into a movie, the movie must be watched within five days of finishing the book. The blog post reviewing the book must be edited promptly to accommodate a movie review.
  3. Books must be annotated when appropriate.
  4. If a book is taken from the library or from a source other than my home, a note must be left in the book with a greeting to the next reader.
  5. One book recommended by a friend must be read. (Divya)
  6. Choose 5 books to recommend to five different friends and discuss it with them when they read it

Blog Post Requirements

  1. A picture of the book.
  2. Title, Author, Genre
  3. Why did I choose to read this book?
  4. If the book is not from home, a picture of the note.
  5. Book review/ reflection
  6. If applicable, movie review
  7. One quote from the book that I feel is meaningful or beautiful
  8. New words
  9. One friend who would enjoy this book
  10. One song in the soundtrack of this book (for either the book as a whole or for a character, must be specified in the blog post)

Flexibility in the laws of The Fifty Books

  1. Nonexistent
  2. It is okay to read more than fifty books, however 50, and no less, must be read

  1. Dear Napoleansplit, thank you for following my art blog. If you need any recommendations, I strongly recommend (for nonfiction) GULAG: A History by Anne Applebaum. Also, for biography: Into the Whirlwind (or Within the Whirlwind) by Eugenia Ginzburg. Two of the most intense books. Also, if you need fiction, try Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (not to be confused with The Invisible Man), or Waiting for the Barbarians (J.M. Coetzee). If you want short stories since that is also a different genre, try Raymond Carver.

    1. Thank you so much, kinneret! I love your blog. I am definitely trying to read some nonfiction, so thank you for the suggestions. GULAG: A History, looks absolutely fantastic. Will try to head to the library and pick it up this week!

You are very welcome 🙂 The book Within the Whirlwind is also fascinating as the author Ginzburg recounts her experience as a Communist party member arrested, tried, sentenced to the GULAG where she somehow against all odds survived through 15 years. The details and story are unimaginable. Really powerful story, one of the best I ever read.

  4. This is a brilliant idea. I really like it. Love the the fact you will be leaving notes in borrowed books. I’m sure not all of your books will be to my tatse but I’m intrigued to see what you are reading. What will happen in May?

    1. Thank you so much! That is definitely true, but I am trying to read a variety so hopefully some books will. I’ll definitely try to check out The Reality Slap 🙂 May is a random deadline :), I think I’ll extend the number on the challenge then!

      2. Thanks, I actually ended up doing a workout on Fitness Blender– really love those! If you are interested in Soviet Russia and Stalin, I am currently reading Journey Into the Whirlwind, an autobiography by Eugenia Ginzburg. It is incredible, heartbreaking and reads like fiction. I’m sure you’d enjoy it 😉

    1. I like to share my thoughts on books I read (classics or others). Just because they are classics doesn’t necessarily mean everyone will appreciate them in the same ways. I try to recognize specific aspects of the book that, to me, make it remarkable (or not so remarkable).

  14. Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering. I love the classics, as well, but have never considered posting my take on any of them because they’ve all been covered so thoroughly. I guess that there will always be new voices that were missed before — that’s why they are classics. I love your blog, BTW.

    1. Thank you so much! I don’t think I’ve been keeping up with rule two 😉 sometimes because I like the picture of the book in my head too much to watch the movie. Your blog is fantastic! I’ve been looking at The Classics Club section, and the reviews are excellent.
